Our program is here to support the needs and goals of your family. This includes:
- Community connections and referrals to resources are provided.
- Individualized family goals are set by you and supported by your Family Educator
- Parent leadership and engagement opportunities are offered within the program, including:

- Parent Committee:
- The Parent Center Committee is an opportunity for parents to plan activities that enhance their own adult development and learning and that support their children’s school readiness. Parents share in decision-making, are responsible for determining how Parent Funds for their group will be used, and for documenting expenditures.
We believe that each child and family’s physical and mental well-being are critical to school readiness and success in life.
- Nutrition and health consultations are available, as well as support in accessing ongoing health and dental care for your child and family.
- Vision and hearing screenings are offered upon enrollment and annually for your child.
- Mental health consultation and services are also available to support your child’s healthy social-emotional development.
- We provide developmental screenings to identify your child’s strengths and any areas in which your child might need additional support.

What is Early Head Start (EHS) / Head Start (HS)?
- Head Start is a federally funded comprehensive child development and family support program for low-income families.
- The program began in 1964 as part of President Johnson’s “War on Poverty” and now serves almost one million families nationwide. • The program provides child health and developmental screenings and assessments.
- Parents receive family support, which may include literacy, counseling, and leadership opportunities, parenting support, and referrals to community resources.
- Our Family Child Care program enrolls infants to 36 months (EHS) and children 3 to 5 years old (HS).
How do Family Child Care Providers offer EHS/HS services?
- The Provider agrees to deliver EHS/HS services through a contract with Puget Sound Educational Service District’s (PSESD) Early Learning program. An EHS/HS contract is an enhancement to the childcare services already offered by the Provider.
- Eligible children are enrolled in both childcare and EHS/HS with all services provided in the same setting throughout the day.
- Both EHS/HS and non-EHS/HS children are served in the same family childcare home, with non-EHS/HS children benefiting from the additional services.
- The Family Child Care Provider is the EHS/HS Teacher and receives support from PSESD Early Learning, as well as from peers at Provider Meetings.
What supports does PSESD offer to the Family Child Care Provider?
- PSESD may assist with paying for training opportunities.
- A PSESD Senior Coordinator provides support visits two times per month.
- A Family Educator hired by PSESD supports families to reach goals for themselves and their children, and provides parents with education opportunities.
How do families enroll in EHS/HS?
- Interested families complete a PSESD Early Learning application. Currently enrolled childcare families may apply. New families are recruited by the Provider and/or PSESD.
- The Family Educator reviews completed applications with each family that applies to determine if eligibility guidelines are met.
- The Family Educator contacts eligible families to complete the enrollment process
How will EHS/HS benefit families that enroll?
- Enrolled children receive individualized learning plans and health and developmental screenings.
- Families receive support and resources to help them meet their goals. They may also receive parenting skills and family literacy activities. Families will also have Parent Leadership opportunities, including participation in Policy Council and Parent Professional Learning.
How will EHS/HS benefit the Family Child Care home?
- Providers are part of a large EHS/HS family that includes childcare centers, school district preschools, and other Family Child Care Providers in King and Pierce County.
- A team of skilled professionals from PSESD support the Family Child Care home and Family Child Care Provider.
- All children and families at the childcare home benefit from the addition of EHS/HS resources and curriculum.
- Providers receive payment for enhanced services (upon completion of monthly deliverables).

- Head Start accepts infants and children up to age 5 (until kindergarten entry)
- ECEAP accepts children ages 3-4 years (must be 3 or 4 years old by Aug 31)
